The Quarter 1 (January to March) 2024 Registrar General Quarterly Tables were published this morning at 9.30am.
Several new tables are available in the release for quarter 1 2024 including:
- Age specific death rates
- Leading causes of death
- Excess deaths by age and sex, and excess deaths by month
- Certificate language requested for vital event registrations.
Key points
- The statistics show a provisional total of 5,059 deaths registered in quarter one of 2024.
- At an overall level there were 1,180 (23.3%) deaths due to cancer, 1,174 (23.2%) deaths due to circulatory disease, and 700 (13.8%) deaths due to respiratory diseases (excluding Covid-19 deaths).
- Looking in more detail the leading cause of death for all persons in Northern Ireland in quarter 1 2024 was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This was also true for females but for males the leading cause of death was ischaemic heart disease.
- A total of 828 marriages were registered in quarter one of 2024, and 11 civil partnerships.
- The number of births registered in quarter one of 2024 was 5,074, which is continuing the slight downward trend observed before the pandemic.
