The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 14 July 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • Deaths registrations for week 28 2023 may have been impacted by the public holiday, as general registration offices were closed for 2 days.
  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 14 July 2023 (week 28) was 218, 125 less than the previous week and 42 less than the 2018-2022 5-year average (260).
  • For the first time since the pandemic, there were no deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate registered in week 28 of 2023, six less than the previous week.
  • In week ending 14 July, 49.8% of deaths were males and 50.2% were females. Over two-thirds (67.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 14 July 2023, there have been 9,445 deaths. 4,503 (47.7%) took place in hospital, 1,615 (17.1%) in care homes and 3,327 (35.2%) at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

Date of death

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 14 July (including those registered up to and including 19 July 2023) was 163.
  • At time of reporting, one Covid-19 related death had occurred in the week ending 14 July, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 14 July 2023 (including those registered up to and including 19 July 2023), to 274.
