Weekly deaths tables – week ending 15 December 2023

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 15 December 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

From week one of 2024, which will be released on Friday 12 January 2024, NISRA Vital Statistics Unit will no longer publish weekly provisional data on Covid-related deaths.  Information on deaths caused by Covid-19 will be available in the Registrar General Quarterly Tables.

Whilst there will be no release on 29 December, two weekly deaths releases will be published on Friday 5 January 2024

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 15 December 2023 (week 50) was 374, 16 more than the previous week, and 23 more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (351).
• Eight deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 50 of 2023, one more than the previous week.  These represented 2.1% of all deaths registered in that week.
• For 2023, by 15 December, 49.8% of deaths were males and 50.2% were females.  Approximately two-thirds (66.6%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 15 December, there have been 16,680 deaths registered. 7,843 (47.0%) of these took place in hospital, 2,891 (17.3%) in care homes and 5,946 (35.6%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 15 December (including those registered up to and including 19 December 2023) was 249. 
• At time of reporting, nine Covid-19 related deaths had occurred in the week ending 15 December, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 15 December (including those registered up to and including 19 December 2023), to 456.
• Please note when comparing weeks, that the number of occurrences recorded this week has been affected by the early release date, as it does not include deaths registered on Wednesday 20 December.
