The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 21 July 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • Deaths registrations for week 29 2023 may have been impacted by the public holiday in week 28, as general registration offices were closed for 2 days.
  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 21 July 2023 (week 29) was 332, 114 more than the previous week and 31 more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (301).
  • Three deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 29 of 2023, three more than the previous week.  These represented 0.9% of all deaths registered in that week.
  • In week ending 21 July, 49.9% of deaths were males and 50.1% were females. Over two-thirds (67.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 21 July 2023, there have been 9,777 deaths. 4,680 (47.9%) took place in hospital, 1,669 (17.1%) in care homes and 3,428 (35.1%) at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 21 July (including those registered up to and including 26 July 2023) was 218.
  • At time of reporting, one Covid-19 related death had occurred in the week ending 21 July, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 21 July 2023 (including those registered up to and including 26 July 2023), to 276.
