The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 28 July 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 28 July 2023 (week 30) was 329, three less than the previous week and 35 more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (294).
  • Three deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 30 of 2023, which was the same number as the previous week.  These represented 0.9% of all deaths registered in that week.
  • For 2023, by 28 July, 49.8% of deaths were males and 50.2% were females.  Over two-thirds (67.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 28 July 2023, there have been 10,106 deaths. 4,828 (47.8%) took place in hospital, 1,735 (17.2%) in care homes and 3,543 (35.1%) at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

Date of death

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 28 July (including those registered up to and including 2 August 2023) was 199.
  • At time of reporting, two Covid-19 related deaths had occurred in the week ending 28 July, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 28 July 2023 (including those registered up to and including 2 August 2023), to 278.
