The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 8 December 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

Due to the Christmas period, the weekly deaths release will be published a day early on Thursday 21 December, there will be no release on 29 December 2023, and will return to normal on 5 January 2024.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 8 December 2023 (week 49) was 358, 29 fewer than the previous week, but five more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (353).
  • Seven deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 49 of 2023, two more than the previous week.  These represented 2.0% of all deaths registered in that week.
  • For 2023, by 8 December, 49.7% of deaths were males and 50.3% were females.  Approximately two-thirds (66.6%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 8 December, there have been 16,306 deaths registered. 7,688 (47.1%) of these took place in hospital, 2,815 (17.3%) in care homes and 5,803 (35.6%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

 

Date of death

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 8 December (including those registered up to and including 13 December 2023) was 226.
  • At time of reporting, two Covid-19 related deaths had occurred in the week ending 8 December, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 8 December (including those registered up to and including 13 December 2023), to 445.
