Traffic Counts of Vehicles at the Fifteen Main Northern Ireland-Ireland Border Crossing Locations

Date published: 10 July 2024

Statistics:

The following tables provide a summary of the volume of vehicles counted at the fifteen main Northern Ireland-Ireland border crossing locations from March 2013 onwards.

Details

The figures presented in these tables  are from the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Traffic Data website and is data collected from the TII traffic counters location on the National Road Network of Ireland.

The tables provide a summary of the volume of vehicles counted at the fifteen main Northern Ireland-Ireland border crossing locations broken out by vehicle type from March 2013 onwards.

The traffic count data will now be available via the new NISRA data portal(external link opens in a new window / tab), which has been designed to enhance the user experience (as described below) and remove the need for Excel tables.

The Data Portal will give users the flexibility to slice and dice datasets, run meta-data searches, filter results, plot interactive charts, visualise data over interactive maps, share results and automate processes by reading data via API queries. The outputs follow the Open Data recommendations by providing access to multiple data formats (CSV, JSON-stat, PX, and XLSX).

Users should note that the data is collected at fifteen border locations, and are therefore a subset of all border crossings and would not present full coverage of all vehicle border crossings. Due to the location of the traffic counters, it is possible that vehicles captured in the data do not cross the Northern Ireland-Ireland border.

The next update to include data up to December 2024 is scheduled for January 2025.
