The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 19 January 2024 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 19 January 2024 (week 3) was 385, 77 less than the previous week, and nine more than the 2019-2023 5-year average (376).
- 19 deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 3 of 2024, one less than the previous week. These represented 4.9% of all deaths registered in that week.
- For 2024, by 19 January, 50.2% of deaths were males and 49.8% were females. Approximately two-thirds (66.9%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 19 January, there have been 1,204 deaths registered. 571 (47.4%) of these took place in hospital, 229 (19.0%) in care homes and 404 (33.6%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 19 January (including those registered up to and including 24 January 2024) was 276.
