Details of the Survey
It includes questions on general health and a wide range of health related issues such as smoking and drinking, fruit and vegetable consumption, stress, exercise, mobility and the use of some health services.
The survey is commissioned by the Department of Health Northern Ireland and the field work is conducted by the Central Survey Unit of NISRA.
Received a letter?
One of our interviewers will visit in the next week or so. We understand you may be busy, so we’ll organise the interview at your home at a time that suits you. Your interviewer will ask you about a range of topics such as your eating habits, what exercise you have taken recently, whether you smoke or drink etc.
A copy of the letters sent to respondents in alternative language versions are available.
Our interviewers will present their official NISRA ID when they call.
Methodology
The Northern Ireland Health Survey is based on a systematic random sample of 6,240 addresses selected from the NISRA Address Register (NAR). The NAR is developed within NISRA and is primarily based on the Land & Property Services (LPS) POINTER database.

Results and publications from the survey are produced by the Department of Health NI and are available on the Department of Health health survey Northern Ireland page.

The Health Survey datasets are available through the UK data archive.
Currently the datasets for the 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 are available.
