The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 20 September 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 20 September 2024 (week 38) was 321, 26 more than the previous week.
- The number of expected deaths for week 38 was estimated at 346 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 313 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 38 was estimated at -25 using the current method.
- For the week ending 20 September 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 175 for males and 171 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -25 for males and 0 for females, using the current method.
- For 2024, by 20 September, 51.1 % of deaths were males and 48.9 % were females. Almost two-thirds (65.0 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 20 September, there have been 13,124 deaths registered. 6,044 (46.1 %) of these took place in hospital, 2,189 (16.7 %) in care homes and 4,891 (37.3 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 20 September (including those registered up to and including 25 September 2024) was 277.
