Weekly deaths tables – week ending 26 April 2024

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 26 April 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 26 April 2024 (week 17) was 375, four less than the previous week.
  • The number of expected deaths for week 17 was estimated at 353 using the new methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 347 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 17 was estimated at 22 using the new method and 28 using the previous method.
  • Two deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 17 of 2024, representing 0.5 percent of all deaths registered that week.
  • For 2024, by 26 April, 50.2% of deaths were males and 49.8% were females.  Almost two-thirds (65.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 26 April, there have been 6,499 deaths registered. 2,955 (45.5%) of these took place in hospital, 1,120 (17.2%) in care homes and 2,424 (37.3%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 26 April (including those registered up to and including 1 May 2024) was 258.
