The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 27 December 2024 were released at 9.30am today.
It should be noted that the total number of registrations completed in week 52 will likely have been impacted by office closures due to the Christmas holidays.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 20 December 2024 (week 51) was 431, and the number registered in the week ending 27 December 2024 (week 52) was 193.
- The number of expected deaths for weeks 51 and 52 were estimated at 410 and 235 respectively, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for weeks 51 and 52 was estimated at 21 and -42 respectively.
- For 2024, by 27 December, 51.2 % of deaths were males and 48.8 % were females. Almost two-thirds (64.9 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 27 December, there have been 17,860 deaths registered. 8,270 (46.3 %) of these took place in hospital, 2,918 (16.3 %) in care homes and 6,672 (37.4 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the weeks ending 20 December and 27 December (including those registered up to and including 1 January 2025) was 302 and 96 respectively.
