The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 31 January 2025 were released at 9.30am today.
This week’s release includes a new series, the provisional, weekly number of deaths involving flu and/or pneumonia (i.e. where either condition has been mentioned on the death certificate) in table 1. This will be available on an ongoing basis in the weekly death registrations release. To set into context a back series of flu/pneumonia related deaths covering 2014 to 2024 has also been published and is available from the weekly deaths webpage.
Key points
Date of registration
- The number of registrations completed in week 5 2025 may have been impacted by office closures that took place at the end of week 4 2025 due to the extreme adverse weather conditions.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 5 2025 totalled 94.
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 31 January (week 5) was 400, 71 more than the previous week (329). However, it should be noted that registrations in week 4 2025 were impacted by office closures due to the severe adverse weather conditions.
- The number of expected deaths for week 5 was estimated at 377, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 5 was estimated at 23.
- For the week ending 31 January 2025, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 188 for males and 189 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 3 for males and 20 for females, using the current method.
- For 2025, by 31 January, 49.3% of deaths were males and 50.7% were females. Over two-thirds (68.4%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2025, by 31 January, there have been 2,109 deaths registered. 996 (47.2%) of these took place in hospital, 393 (18.6%) in care homes and 720 (34.1%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 31 January (including those registered up to and including 5 February 2025) was 305.
