General Register Office which is part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) is responsible for registration of births, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships and adoptions. NISRA releases weekly counts of death registrations.
Since the April 3rd publication, the Weekly Deaths Statistics have been enhanced to give total deaths registered, total respiratory deaths registered and the total deaths registered where Covid-19 was mentioned by the doctor certifying the death.
NISRA have been working with the Department of Health on providing further information on Covid-19 related deaths. From this Friday 17th April, the bulletin which will reflect deaths up to and including the 10th of April will give deaths by place of occurrence i.e. hospital setting and non-hospital setting. Where a further breakdown (such as care homes and other settings) can be provided without compromising confidentiality NISRA will provide this.
Background:
NISRA figures are derived from the formal process of death registration and may include cases where the doctor completing the death certificate diagnosed suspected cases of COVID-19, for example, where this was based on relevant symptoms but no test for the virus was conducted. The figures in the weekly NISRA report are provisional and subject to revision, although at the time of publication they represent the best data available at that point in time.
