Weekly deaths tables – week ending 13 September 2024

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 13 September 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 13 September 2024 (week 37) was 295, 28 more than the previous week.
• The number of expected deaths for week 37 was estimated at 363 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 327 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 37 was estimated at -68 using the current method.
• For the week ending 13 September 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 183 for males and 180 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -23 for males and -45 for females, using the current method.
• For 2024, by 13 September, 51.2 % of deaths were males and 48.8 % were females.  Almost two-thirds (64.9 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 13 September, there have been 12,804 deaths registered. 5,889 (46.0 %) of these took place in hospital, 2,144 (16.7 %) in care homes and 4,771 (37.3 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 13 September (including those registered up to and including 18 September 2024) was 231.
