Friday 23 February: For the first time table 1, in the weekly death registrations tables, includes estimates based on the new UK-wide methodology to report on excess deaths. The new method is as advised by ONS in their blog post and methodology paper, and as pre-announced by NISRA in the October 2023 Vital Statistics newsletter and summarised in the information paper published on 20 February. This was also followed up with an additional explainer paper in January 2025 to demonstrate to users both the need for the change in methodology, and how the model-based approach has improved accuracy of estimated expected deaths..
We will continue to include both 5-year averages (including and excluding 2020) as the previous estimate of expected deaths, in addition to the new baseline for calculating excess deaths, for comparison and transparency purposes.
It should be noted that the total number of registrations completed in week 52 will likely have been impacted by office closures due to the Christmas holidays.
