Weekly deaths tables – up to week ending 18 April 2025

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 18 April 2025 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 18 April (week 16) was 365, 81 more than the previous week (284).
- The number of expected deaths for week 16 was estimated at 350, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 16 was estimated at 15.
- For the week ending 18 April 2025, the provisional number of deaths was 205 for males and 160 for females.
- The number of expected deaths was estimated at 177 for males and 173 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 28 for males and -13 for females, using the current method.
- For 2025, by 18 April, 50.5% of deaths were males and 49.5% were females. Over two-thirds (67.4%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2025, by 18 April, there have been 5,942 deaths registered. 2,738 (46.1%) of these took place in hospital, 1,069 (17.8%) in care homes and 2,144 (36.1%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 16 2025 totalled 63, bringing the total for 2025 so far to 1193.
Date of death
- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 18 April (including those registered up to and including 23 April 2025) was 237.
