Registrar General Quarterly Tables 2021 Quarter 4

The Quarter 4 (October to December) 2021 Registrar General Quarterly Tables were published this morning at 9.30am.

Key Points

The statistics show a total of 4,626 deaths registered in Q4 of 2021 leading to an overall, annual, provisional 2021 total of 17,558 deaths registered. Of this annual total, 1,849 (10.5%) deaths had Covid-19 as the underlying cause. This compares with 4,591 (26.1%) deaths due to cancer, 1,571 (8.9%) deaths due to Ischaemic heart disease, and 1,553 (8.8%) due to respiratory diseases (excluding Covid-19 deaths).
There were 42 deaths due to suicide (excluding events of undetermined intent) registered in Quarter 4, bringing the provisional total to 220 in 2021. This is 22 more than the provisional number registered in 2020 (198). These figures cannot be interpreted as the total number of suicides occurring during the year of registration however, due to the time delay in such deaths being investigated by the Coroner and subsequently being registered.
A total of 1,852 marriages were registered in Quarter 4 2021, and 9 civil partnerships. This brings the annual total for 2021 up to 7,921 marriages, which is much more in line with pre-covid numbers than the 2020 total of (3,714), while the 37 civil partnerships remains lower than pre-covid numbers (usually at around 100 per year).
The number of births in this Quarter was 5,418, which is comparable to the same period in previous years. The provisional total number of births registered in 2021 was 22,092, which is an increase of 1,257 from the 2020 final total of 20,815.
