Weekly deaths tables – week ending 23 June 2023

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 23 June 2023 were released at 9.30am today.

Please note: the content of the weekly deaths tables are under review and will be reduced from July 2023. From  Friday 7 July there will be a reduction in the amount of detailed analysis of covid-related deaths and deaths by occurrence date. Please note analysis for all deaths registered and top level data on covid-related deaths will continue to be available in the weekly tables. We will, of course, keep this under review should the need arise to include more analysis again. Please note that the weekly deaths publication for week 27 (week ending 7 July) will be published on Monday 17 July instead of Friday 14 July, due to the bank holiday.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 23 June 2023 (week 25) was 372, 30 more than the previous week and 78 more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (294).
• Seven deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 25 of 2023, the same as the previous week.  These represented 1.9% of all deaths registered in that week.
• The total number of Covid-19 related deaths registered from the start of the pandemic was 5,325 by 23 June 2023.
• Since the beginning of the pandemic to 16 June 2023, the 75 years and over age-group accounted for almost two-thirds (65.6%) of all deaths and almost three-quarters (74.3%) of Covid-19 related deaths.
• Over the period of the pandemic, Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon District had a higher proportions of Covid-19 related deaths (12.3%) compared with their share of all deaths in Northern Ireland (10.3%).

Covid-19 deaths based on date of death

• 5,328 deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate have occurred in total from 18 March 2020 to 23 June 2023 (including those registered up to and including 28 June 2023).
• At time of reporting, one Covid-19 related death had occurred in week ending 23 June.
• Of these 5,328 deaths involving Covid-19, 3,741 (70.2%) took place in hospital, 1,085 (20.4%) in care homes and 502 (9.4%) at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.
