The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 3 May 2024 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 3 May 2024 (week 18) was 359, 16 less than the previous week.
- The number of expected deaths for week 18 was estimated at 336 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 327 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 18 was estimated at 23 using the current method and 32 using the previous method.
- Four deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 18 of 2024, representing 1.1 percent of all deaths registered that week.
- For 2024, by 3 May, 50.5% of deaths were males and 49.5% were females. Almost two-thirds (65.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 3 May, there have been 6,858 deaths registered. 3,120 (45.5%) of these took place in hospital, 1,174 (17.1%) in care homes and 2,564 (37.4%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
A breakdown of expected and excess deaths by sex will be added to the weekly death registration tables next week, in advance of ONS plans to do same for all UK regions.
