Weekly deaths tables – week ending 17 May 2024

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 17 May 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 17 May 2024 (week 20) was 370, 82 more than the previous week.
• The number of expected deaths for week 20 was estimated at 352 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 333 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 20 was estimated at 18 using the current method and 37 using the previous method.
• For the week ending 17 May 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 179 for males and 174 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 8 for males and 9 for females, using the current method.
• Two deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 20 of 2024, representing 0.5 % of all deaths registered that week.
• For 2024, by 17 May, 50.5 % of deaths were males and 49.5 % were females.  Almost two-thirds (64.8 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 17 May, there have been 7,516 deaths registered. 3,380 (45.0 %) of these took place in hospital, 1,294 (17.2 %) in care homes and 2,842 (37.8 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 17 May (including those registered up to and including 22 May 2024) was 242.
