Weekly deaths tables – up to week ending 10 January 2025

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 10 January 2025 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 10 January (week 2) was 544.
• The number of expected deaths for week 2 was estimated at 488, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 2 was estimated at 56. Users should note that a supplementary information paper relating to the change in methodology for calculating expected deaths will be published on the NISRA website on Monday 20 January.
• For the week ending 10 January 2025, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 244 for males and 243 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 44 for males and 13 for females, using the current method.
• For 2025, by 10 January, 52.4 % of deaths were males and 47.6 % were females. Over two-thirds (67.3 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• In 2025, there have been 960 deaths registered. 455 (47.4 %) of these took place in hospital, 182 (19.0 %) in care homes and 323 (33.6 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 10 January (including those registered up to and including 15 January 2025) was 330.
